Cancun, Mexico - The Florida A&M University Men’s Basketball team dropped an 88-73 decision to Rider University in the Cancun Challenge at the Moon Palace Resort.
FAMU (0-5) had two Rattlers to finish in double figures with Dale Hughes leading the way with 15 points, while Travis Wallace finished with 10. Larry Jackson led the team in rebounding with a game high 10 boards.
A Rasheem Jenkins three pointer with 15:06 remaining in the first half, capped an game-opening FAMU 11-4 run.
Novar Gadson would tie the game at 24-24 for the Broncs on a layup with 8:19 to go capping a 10-2 run.
A three-point play by Brandon Bryant would give the Rattlers a 37-30 lead with 1:53 remaining, but RU would close the gap as they would go on a 7-2 run to end the first half on a Ryan Thompson layup with two seconds remaining in the half.
FAMU would go into the break with a 39-37 lead
In the second stanza, RU would open up with two quick scores by Justin Robins at the 19:21 mark would tie the game at 39-39, followed by a pair of Gadson free throw would the game for the second time, 41-41 at the 18:39 mark.
A Mike Ringgold three point play at the 14:57 mark of the second half would cap a 10-0 run by RU, making the score 51-41 in favor of the Broncs.
The Rattlers would cut the Broncs' lead to seven on two occasions in the second half on a Dale Hughes three pointer at the 12:33 mark to make the 55-48 and again on a made free throw by Larry Jackson at the 7:36 mark, cutting RU’s lead to 65-58.
That would be as close as the Rattlers would get as the Broncs outscored the Rattlers 51-34 in the second half for an 88-73 final.
The Rattlers finished the first half shooting a blazing 51.6 percent, while the Broncs shot 48.1 percent. FAMU finished the game shooting 45.2 percent, while Rider shot 48.3 percent.
Rider (3-2) was led by Justine Robinson, who scored a game high 23 points, followed by Mike Ringgold with 17, Novar Gadson, who added 15, while Ryan Thompson tallied 13. Gadson led the Broncs on the boards with nine.
