FAMU Wins Series Despite Falling to Spartans

FAMU punches out eight hits, but only manufactories two runs in loss, Sunday.

Norfolk State avoided a three game sweep by Florida A&M in a 10-2 romp in their final Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference game, Sunday afternoon here at Moore-Kittles Field.

FAMU (15-32, 11-7 MEAC) finished with eight hits with Darryl Evans, Jared Jeffries and Anthony Mazzeo, all finishing with two hits each.

NSU (21-21, 9-8 MEAC) belted out 13 hits with a quartet of players finishing with two hits each in Ryan Wiggins, Juan Serrano, Ernie Banks, and Anselmo Cantu.

Luke Foss (8-2) got the win for the Spartans, giving up one earned run and striking out three in seven innings, while Timothy Schalch (3-3) took the loss for the Rattlers, giving up nine hits and four earned runs in five innings.

David James gave FAMU a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, when he scored on a Mazzeo double to leftfield.

In the top of the second inning, NSU took the lead on a Chris Dorney three-run homer, giving the Spartans a 3-1 lead.

The Spartans increased their lead in the top of the fifth, when Jerrod Farley scored on a wild pitch, followed by a Juan Serrano double scoring Ryan Wiggins. Serrano would then score on a Banks single, giving NSU a 6-1 lead.

FAMU scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a NSU outfielder’s error scoring Jeffries, cutting the Spartans lead to 6-2.

The Spartans would then score four more runs in the top of the eight inning for the 10-2 final.

FAMU will celebrate senior night on Monday, May 7 in the first game of a two game series against Florida International, with the first pitch slated for 6 p.m.
