It's been in the works for a couple of year now. The South Georgia Peanuts finally play a game and it counts. All 6 teams in the brand new independent league will have played come tonight.
The first league game took place last night in Macon, Georgia. But now, it's time for the Peanuts to get one under their belts. They travel to Charlotte County for opening day, right-hander Austin Weilep gets the nod from Manager Wally Backman to pitch in this one. As for as getting some help from the hitters. Expect many calls to the Doc this year.
Doc Brooks has perhaps the most established resume on the active roster. The former Georgia Bulldog has played in the Minor Leagues, and now looks to lead the Peanuts.
Brooks said, "It's alright. Should be a good atmosphere. Something different for the young guys. It's a chance to play baseball."
