Peanuts Return from Road Trip Undefeated

The South Georgia Peanuts, presented by Security Bank, will be undefeated
as they come home for the first time Thursday night. For the second night
in a row, the Peanuts got ahead in the top of first and then led
throughout. The Peanuts swept their three game series with Anderson by
winning 10-4 Wednesday night.

In the first with one out, Joey Hooft singled and then stole his
league-leading sixth base of the season. Doc Brooks then walked and Tug
Gillingham singled to load the bases. The Peanuts hottest hitter of late,
Brandon Woolard, then hit a double to score all three runners. Johnny
Washington, who dropped to seventh in the lineup, single home Woolard to
give the Peanuts a 4-0 lead after a half inning. Anderson got a run back
in the bottom of the inning but left another runner on.

In the fourth, the Peanuts scored three more runs. Washington, Chris
Demons and Jasha Balcom all scored in the inning while pitcher Austin
Weilep, Balcom and Nick Prosise each had an RBI. Anderson got a run back
in the bottom of the fourth but South Georgia scored two more in the top
of the fifth. Anderson got another run back in the bottom of the inning
but the Peanuts led 9-4 after five innings. The Peanuts scored one more
run in the sixth when Gillingham led off with a single, went first to
third on a Woolard single and scored on a Butler fielder’s choice.

Austin Weilep got the start for the Peanuts and drastically improved on
his first performance of the season. Weilep went six innings allowing four
runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Pat Ford pitched two innings of
no-hit baseball including two strikeouts and Damas Garcia pitched a
scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.

The game marked the first professional game for Tug Gillingham at third
base. Gillingham, who is the team’s emergency infielder, started the game
in the catcher’s position. Hooft had to come out of the game in the top of
the first when he was on the base paths. Before Gillingham even got the
opportunity to put on the catcher’s gear, he switched to third base and
Nick Prosise came in to catch.

South Georgia comes home for the first time in the team’s existence. The
Peanuts will play the Charlotte County RedFish Thursday night. Dustin
Taylor will start the game for South Georgia. Jake Baker is expected to
start for Charlotte County. Game time is 7:10. Tickets are still available
by calling the Peanuts’ office at (229) 435-8900 or by visiting the team’s
