TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (May 31, 2007) – Tallahassee Community College men’s basketball coach Eddie Barnes has announced that sophomore forward Andy Buechert has signed a National Letter of Intent to continue his education and athletic career at Winthrop University.
A native of Trier, Germany, where he played at Wintschafts High School, the 6-foot-9, 230-pound Buechert entered the 2006-07 season as one of the top big men in the country; however, a foot injury in the Eagles’ season opener limited him to 18 games. He returned after a month-long absence and averaged 6.9 points and 3.4 rebounds per game and was selected to the Coaches’ All-Panhandle Conference second-team squad.
“Andy has a tremendous upside,” said Barnes. “He had a great summer and fall last year and we were expecting big things from him before the foot injury set him back. I thought he was going to be a double-double guy for us. He is a very physical player and has great range to be able to step out, put the ball on the floor and shoot the 16-footer as well as score down low in the paint with either hand.”
As in freshman in 2005-06, Buechert averaged 4.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game, helping TCC to the FCCAA/NJCAA Region VIII Championship and an appearance in the 2006 NJCAA Championship Game.
“Andy is a wonderful young man that comes to us from a tremendous junior college program,” added Winthrop head coach Randy Peele, who recently too the reigns of a program that has won three consecutive Big South Conference Championships and defeated Notre Dame in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Tournament. “Coach Barnes has established a nationally recognized program at Tallahassee Community College and does a great job of teaching and developing his players.”
During his two seasons at TCC (2005-07), Buechert and the Eagles compiled a record of 55-11, captured a share of the 2006 Panhandle Conference Championship and made back-to-back appearances in the Florida Community College Activities Association (FCCAA)/NJCAA Region VIII Tournament.
