After Re-hiring One Coach, Gators Do Away with Another

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida fired baseball coach Pat McMahon on Thursday, just hours after the Gators rehired basketball coach Billy Donovan.

Athletic director Jeremy Foley said that he lost confidence in McMahon.

"It was a decision that was made because I do not think our baseball program was headed in the right direction," Foley said. "It's a difficult day."

Assistant coaches Ross Jones and Tim Parenton also were dismissed.

"Our athletics director has decided to move our baseball program in a different direction," McMahon wrote in a statement.

"I am extremely disappointed. I know in my heart that I have given every fiber of my body to run all areas of the program in a first-class manner with the highest principles."

McMahon took over as head coach in June 2001 and compiled a record of 231-141-1. He led the Gators to the 2005 College World Series championship game, where they lost to Texas. The team suffered consecutive losing seasons the past two years.
