Dallas, TX – Seminole senior Andre Fluellen was one of 41 linemen named to the watch list for the 2007 Outland Trophy. The Outland Trophy has been awarded to the best interior lineman in college football since 1946. The winner is selected by the FWAA's All-America Committee, which selects the association's 25-man All-America team and picks the three Outland Trophy finalists and the winner.
A pre-season All-America Honorable Mention selection by nationalchamps.com, Fluellen is rated as the fifth best tackler in the nation and is as pre-season All-ACC First Team selection by The Sporting News. The Cartersville, GA native has already been named to the preseason All-ACC First-Team by Blue Ribbon Magazine and is rated the No. 21 defensive lineman in the nation according to Rivals.com. The fifth-year senior is a team leader who will start on the defensive line for the second consecutive season. Fluellen has started 25 of the last 26 games on the defensive line. In 2006 he started 11 games at the nose guard position and two games at the defensive tackle position. He enters the 2007 season with 16.5 tackles for minus yardage – the ninth highest career total in school history. Fluellen is coming off a dominant spring where he was named as the Most Valuable Defensive player and earned the prestigious Hinesman Award as the Most Dominant player as awarded by the coaching staff.
The 2007 Outland Trophy announcement will be on Dec. 6 in Orlando, Fla., on the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show. The Outland Trophy presentation banquet, sponsored by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee, will be in January 2008 in Omaha, Neb.
The Outland Trophy is named after the late John Outland, a lineman at Pennsylvania at the turn of the century. Wisconsin offensive tackle Joe Thomas won the 2006 Outland Trophy.
