DETROIT (AP) _ Justin Verlander has become the sixth pitcher in
the Detroit Tigers' 107-season history to throw a no-hitter.
Verlander struck out a career-high 12 and walked four while
leading the Tigers to a 4-to-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.
He completed the gem by fanning the first two hitters of the ninth
before getting J.J. Hardy to fly out to right.
Verlander is the first Tigers' pitcher to toss a no-hitter since
Jack Morris did it against the Chicago White Sox in April of 1984.
It's the first no-hitter at Comerica Park, and the first home no-no
by a Tigers hurler since Virgil Trucks in 1952.
Verlander improved to 7-and-2 and lowered his E-R-A to
Brandon Inge (ihnj) opened the scoring with a solo homer in the
third before adding an R-B-I single in the seventh. Curtis
Granderson had an R-B-I triple in the Tigers' third straight win.
Jeff Suppan (SOO'-pahn) was lifted in the seventh, charged with
four runs and seven hits to fall to 7-and-7.
