Greg Guilliams said, "I'm just looking for guys who can make our baseball team better."
It's Valdosta State's new baseball coach Greg Guilliams first order of business after taking over for retiring Tommy Thomas.
Guilliams said, "The first thing we're looking at is everyone's running speed because speed is the only skill you can use in baseball on both offense and defense. Also looking for players arm strengths, trying to take a look at what there swing looks like."
Guilliams held open tryouts at Billy Grant Field Thursday and with more than 40 in attendance it was clear that it still means something to be a Blazer.
Tuzer Chism said, "I mean, it should be fun just seeing the people who came through here and play here and just basically follow in their footsteps it should be really fun."
Whether Guilliams finds that diamond in the rough remains to be seen, but what he does know is he has mighty large shoes to fill.
Guilliams said, "Legend is right, the all-time winningest baseball coach in Division II history. The way I look at it is it's just an honor it really is an honor, Tommy is such a first class guy. I want to keep Tommy involved with our baseball program I think that's important."
Guilliams hopes that he can build a first class program of his own.
