ABCA Recognizes Four Seminoles on All-America Team

Omaha, Neb. – The America Baseball Coaches Association & Rawlings announced the Division I All-America Teams on Tuesday, June 19 recognizing four Seminoles in 2007. Tony Thomas, Jr. and Bryan Henry earned first team honors, while Buster Posey and Mark Hallberg received third-team accolades.

The ABCA All-America Teams are collegiate baseball’s oldest selections, dating to 1949. All Division I coaches have the opportunity to nominate and vote on these selections, which are initially compiled into eight All-Region team. These teams are then finalized as the first, second and third All-America teams by the ABCA’s NCAA Division I All-America and Coach of the Year Committee, chaired by Pat McMahon. This year, the committee selected 59 players as 2007 ABCA All-Americans.

Just a few weeks ago, the ABCA announced its Atlantic All-Region team as Thomas, Henry, Posey and Hallberg all earned first-team honors. By being named to the Atlantic All-Region first team, all four student-athletes were in the running for All-America recognition which they made.

Thomas was named to his fifth first team All-America team in 2007. The junior second baseman, who was drafted in the third round by the Chicago Cubs, was named a first team member by Louisville Slugger, the NCBWA, Baseball America, Rivals.com and now the ABCA. The Valrico, Fla., native becomes just the sixth consensus first team All-American in FSU history and the third in the last four years joining Eddie Martinez-Esteve (2004) and Shane Robinson (2005).

Henry adds his second first team All-America accolade to his list of honors in 2007. The senior right hander was one of five pitchers, including four starters, named to ABCA’s first team. Henry was also a first team selection by Louisville Slugger, while earning second team honors by the NCBWA and Rivals.com.

Posey collected third team recognition as a catcher from the ABCA after moving behind the plate during his sophomore season for the first time in his career. The Leesburg, Ga., native went on to lead the team in RBI’s with 65 and 31 two-out hits. This year he was also named a first team All-American by Collegiate Baseball and a second team All-American by Baseball America. Posey is one of three finalists in the running for the Johnny Bench Award, given to the best catcher in collegiate baseball.

Hallberg rounds out this year’s ABCA All-America team earning third team honors at the shortstop position. In his first season as a Seminole, the junior transfer from Illinois-Chicago started all 62 games at short where he posted a fielding percentage of .975 and was sixth on the team in hitting with a .360 average. The Barron, Wisc., native also earned first team All-ACC recognition in 2007.
