Devil Rays Fall to White Sox

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ Jon Garland and Matt Thornton
combined on a six-hitter as the Chicago White Sox whipped Tampa Bay
6-to-1.
Garland is 5-and-5 after holding the Devil Rays to a run and
five hits over seven-plus innings. Garland had a shutout until Greg
Norton homered in the fifth inning.
Andy Gonzalez smacked his first career homer, a two-run shot in
the White Sox's four-run fifth. Jim Thome (TOH'-mee) homered two
pitches later to put Chicago ahead 5-to-0.
Gonzalez had three R-B-Is as the White Sox won their second
straight since a five-game skid.
James Shields served up two homers while yielding five runs and
nine hits in seven innings. He's 6-and-3.
