A Hot Weekend of Racing

CECIL, GA. With the hot summer weather finally upon us the racing action at South Georgia Motorsports Park (SGMP) has gotten even hotter with competition on both the all concrete dragstrip and asphalt speedway.

The weekend of June 23rd and 24th began as SGMP dragstrip hosted the Junior Dragster Challenge, 1st Annual Summer Dash. Saturday’s event featured ½ sized dragsters with power plants based on the five horsepower Briggs engines piloted by kids ages 8 to 16.

Valerie Clements of Central S.C. with a 4.394 ET out powered Sean McRaney of Breaux Bridge, La. in a new dragster with a 4.470 ET in the final.

As action with the kids was winding down, the speeds cranked up a few notches as the stars of the McDonalds Super Series took to the banks of the oval. Speedway manager, Chris Mize involved the Jr Dragster kids in a golf cart race on the oval with the win purse going to the families of the fire fighters who perished is Charleston, S.C. Fans also contributed and additional $582.00 for the families as well.

In Pure Stock division it was all Joey Webb of Jasper, Fl putting a tight packed field in his mirror. In possibly the show of the night, Super Stock drivers Carl Black and Randy Merwin both of Valdosta ran a tight first half of their feature. As the race progressed, Black found his groove to be trailed by Merwin a several lengths back.
