Tech's Mario West Hoping for Spot

ATLANTA (AP) _ Mario West understands the philosophy of
performing well enough to stand out from the pack. As a walk-on
freshman, he impressed Georgia Tech coaches enough with his
defensive tenacity, hustle on the court and athleticism to earn him
a scholarship four years ago.
Now, West is trying to translate what he accomplished as a
walk-on at Georgia Tech into the N-B-A, where he is aiming for a
roster spot with the Atlanta Hawks.
After a few summer league practices, West has already gained
recognition as a gritty defender with stupendous leaping ability.
He won the slam dunk contest at the Final Four earlier this year.
Hawks coach Mike Woodson has taken notice of West in summer
league practices. But as a rookie free agent, getting a roster spot
in the pros is tougher than college.
Woodson says the fact that West defends and rebounds for his
size is a great attribute. But Atlatn has a lot of perimeter
players, and West struggles with his outside jumper and ball
