WCTV met with Cairo High Athletic Director Carlton Gainous early on Thursday to find out who would follow Tommy York's reign as the head man on the diamond.
York retired after the '06 season's end, his 7th as the head man of the Syrup-makers. The coach to follow is a familiar face. Former coach of the Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets, and more recently an umpire, Ron Best.
The "Best" man for the job will have to help the 'Makers rebuild after a loss to Henry County in the first round of the Class 3-A playoffs. You can expect Cairo's new coach to keep a close eye on the umpires.
"We took applications for a couple of weeks and interviewed several highly qualified candidates, many of which could have come on board and done a fine job, but we decided to go with Ron. Ron has been umpiring, so he hasn't been out of baseball the past few years. He's been an umpire, he still keeps up with the game, he still knows the game, and of course, his record spoke for itself," says Cairo High AD Carlton Gainous.
