17-Year-Old Takes Georgia Amateur Championship

ROSWELL, Ga. (AP) _ Harris English of Thomasville overcame a
five-stroke deficit to capture the Georgia Amateur Championship by
shooting par 72 for a 72-hole total of even-par 288.
The 17-year-old English edged Mark Stricklando of Woodstock by
one shot, with Strickland's 12-foot par putt on the final hole
lipping around the cup at Ansley Golf Club-Settingdown Creek in
Jeff Knox of Augusta and Robert Sheats of Atlanta, two of four
first-round co-leaders, tied Strickland (also a first-round
co-leader) for runner-up honors.
It was Knox's second-straight runner-up finish in the Georgia
Amateur. Third-round leader Jeff Belk of Marietta shot 77 and
finished tied for fifth with 2003 Georgia Amateur Champion David
Noll Jr. of Dalton at 290.
Savannah's Doug Hanzel had his second straight 74 to take sole
possession of seventh place at 291. Defending champion Bill Brown
of Dublin finished tied for eighth at 4-over 292 with Blake Stark
of Canton and John Clendenin of Acworth.
Play was suspended for 37 minutes beginning at 2:19 p.m. because
of a heavy rainstorm.
