BOSTON (AP) - Tim Wakefield didn't allow a hit until the seventh inning, pitching the Boston Red Sox to a 3-0 shutout over the Tampa Devil Rays. Wakefield and Jonathan Papelbon combined on the two-hitter.
Boston had lost four of its previous six games while watching the New York Yankees cut the lead in the AL East to four games. Wakefield improved to 14-and-10 with eight strong innings, striking out six and allowing just two hits. Papelbon got his 28th save.
Carl Crawford spoiled Wakefield's no-hit bid when he led off the seventh with a single. Julio Lugo had three hits, singled in a run and scored another. James Shields allowed one run and five hits in six innings. He's 9 and 8 for the Devil Rays.
