We are now down to four more events in the race for the Nextel Cup, and with the post-season contenders rounding into shape, the drivers are beginning to change focus as they ride out the remainder of the regular season. For Jimmy Johnson, the defending Nextel Champ is trying to right his ship after a July slump with crew chief Chad Knaus suspended.
"We are excited to get Chad back. I think we've been performing really strong as a team, we've certainly been less of a team without him there, but I have to give the guys a lot of credit, for staying focused and really working through the six-week suspension and how tough that's been on us," says Jimmie Johnson.
Fellow Hendrick Motorsports star Jeff Gordon is also utilizing the remaining races to concentrate on motives other than winning. With a comfortable lead, Gordon is now looking for way to improve the performance of his 24 machine on the track.
"Our goal right now is to get our cars working better, faster, just trying, experimenting, and doing things that really just take our whole team to the next level, and we're just always looking for more speed," cites Gordon.
This weekend the boys head to Mo-Town, and while the likes of Kurt Busch, Ryan Newman, and Dale Earnhardt Junior battle for the final spot in the Nextel Cup Series, those who have built up a lead, are just focusing on the hunt that lies ahead.
