FAMU Journalism Professer Joe Ritchie says, "It is a crazy atmosphere. You've got the face painting, and people singing in multiple languages. Packed, just flags all over the place. It's really quite an atmosphere and really something most of our students have never seen anything like it, I can assure you."
But for 6 FAMU journalism students, they will be seeing it first hand, as part of a 6 week internship in South Africa! Covering everything from the World Cup games to the economic impact on the country, Professor Joe Ritchie and his students are embarking on an unprecedented trip.
Ritchie adds, "Certainly no journalism school our size has done anything quite like this. I've heard of other students going abroad before but this is the first time for FAMU, and the fact that we're partering with another University on the other side of the planet, and meeting on the African Continent, I just think it's a totally out of the box kind of situation, and we're really looking forward to it."
Graduate Broadcast Journalism student Wandoo Makurdi says, "I have a lot of jealous friends, right at this moment who don't understand how I'm able to go for the entire 6 weeks, when people can't go for one game! To see that we not only have access, but we have access along with students from Shantou University in China, I think is really incredible to have pulled off."
Makurdi says it may be difficult to fight the fan in her, especially since her home country of Nigeria qualified for the World Cup, but with the students doing everything from print to broadcast, blogs and podcasts, it might be difficult to celebrate from the press box.
