PENSACOLA, Fla. – Valdosta State fell just short against No. 1 West Florida Sunday, falling, 1-0, to the Argonauts. The Blazers did not allow a goal from the top team in the nation until the 71st minute of play.
West Florida outshot VSU, 15-10 in the match while placing seven shots on goal. The Blazers put four on goal.
Goalkeeper Olivia Mills was able to make more saves than West Florida’s keeper Sarah Story, 6-4. Unfortunately, the one that West Florida snuck by Mills was all the Argonauts needed to win.
Valdosta State finished the match with one more foul than West Florida, 14-13, and three less corner kicks, 8-5.
In the 71st minute, West Florida’s Julianne Gaubron was able to one touch the ball past Mills off the assist from Sashana Campbell for the winning goal.
For VSU, Emily Cooper, Arielle Sabina, Shelby Jennings and Lauren Ingram were the only Blazers to put a shot on goal in the match. Karly Lentz and Ingram led the Blazers in shots with two each.
The loss drops VSU to 10-2-2 on the season. The match did not count in Gulf South Conference play so the Blazers stay at 3-1-1 in the GSC. West Florida improves to 13-1.
Valdosta State will next be in action Saturday at 3 p.m. at Union.
