Tallahassee - The No. 10/11-ranked Florida State softball team (25-4, 6-2 ACC) took down NC State (15-9, 6-3 ACC) by a score of 5-1 on Sunday to complete the season sweep of the Wolfpack. The Seminoles have swept NC State in the regular season each of the past three years and have won seven straight series dating back to 2007.

“Great series sweep for this family. Our bullpen works so well together. Lacey is a great role model for Jessica and JB is learning more every time she goes out. Nori and Bailey also help put together game plans and it is fun to see them go out and execute. NC State is a solid program and to gut out three wins against a team like that gives us a lot of confidence moving forward.”

Sunday morning started out as a pitcher’s duel between Florida State’s Jessica Burroughs and NC State’s Emily Weiman. Burroughs allowed a single in the top of the first to Lana Van Dyken but settled in and retired the next 19 batters she faced, recording a career-high 10 strikeouts.

Burroughs (10-1) entered the game with the ACC’s lowest batting average allowed and lowered it even further to .164 after today’s two-hit performance. It was the second time this season that Burroughs has thrown a complete game without allowing a walk.

Weiman posted 3.0 perfect innings before allowing a leadoff bunt single to Tiffani Brown, extending her hitting streak to 14 consecutive games.

Courtney Senas came to the plate a batter later and, much like Maddie O’Brien in Saturday night’s game, worked a full count and fouled off several Weiman pitches before crushing a home run to centerfield to give the Seminoles a two-run lead. Senas is now second in the conference with 33 RBI.

Florida State added to the lead after senior Kelly Hensley was walked and pinch ran for by freshman Bella D’Errico. Victoria East drilled the first pitch she saw to the wall in right-center for an RBI double to make it 3-0 FSU.

The Wolfpack brought in pitcher Courtney Mirabella for the Seminole fifth. Weiman (13-8) earned the loss after throwing 4.0 innings, allowing three runs on three hits with two strikeouts.

FSU loaded the bases in both the fifth and sixth off Mirabella and were able to push across two runs in the sixth on an infield single by Brown to the second baseman. Heads-up base running came from Bailey Schinella as she rounded third aggressively after Brown’s single, inducing NC State to throw behind her. The junior instantly sprinted home on the throw, scoring easily and extending FSU’s lead to 5-0.

NC State would get on the board with two outs in the seventh as designated player Hanna Sommer hit a solo home run to center.

The Seminoles head to Jacksonville on Wed., March 19 for a doubleheader against North Florida starting at 4:00 p.m.
