Tulsa, OK - Dominic Cotrone won two matches today to advance to the Qualifying Round of the ITA All-American Champions at the University of Tulsa. The Florida State men’s tennis team went 3-2 today in the third and fourth rounds of the Pre-Qualifying draw. Qualifying begins tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. for the Seminoles at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Cotrone, a sophomore from Bradenton, Fla., faced off against Bryan Welnetz of Penn State and won 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 in the third round. Cotrone returned right back to the courts and defeated Alez Palaez of Illinois State for a berth into the Qualifying draw. He won 5-7, 6-2, 7-6 (3). Cotrone takes on Rafael Davidian of Utah Monday at 12:30 p.m.

“I really did not play my best today but I knew I needed to find a way to win,” said Cotrone. “I battled all day and came out with two victories coming behind. Coach Dwayne and I just tried to take it one point at a time and it worked out in the end. It feels good to make it through Pre-Qualifying.”

Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.) joins Cotrone in the qualifying draw as a lucky loser after going 1-1 today. In the third round, the senior defeated Badr Cherradi (Southern Illinois) 6-2, 7-6. In the fourth round, he fell to TCU’s Arnau Dachs 7-5, 6-2. Reed faces off against David O’Leary of Memphis at 5:00 p.m.

“I was proud of Dominic for qualifying after playing six sets today,” said head coach Dwayne Hultquist. “He had a really tough opponent to qualify and really stepped it up to win the tiebreaker in the third set by playing aggressively at the net. Anderson had a really good win this morning and had a tough match but was fortunate to get in as a lucky loser.”

Automatically selected for the Qualifying Round were seniors Jordan Kelly-Houston (Christchurch, New Zealand) and Andres Bucaro (Guatemala City, Guatemala) and sophomore Benjamin Lock (Pretoria, South Africa). Bucaro faces Shawn Bernstein of Michigan at 9:00 a.m. while Kelly-Houston takes on Vanderbilt’s Ryan Lipman at 10:30 a.m. Lock takes the court at 11:30 a.m. against Matthew Kirby of Tulsa.

Singles quarterfinalists, doubles finalists and consolation champions will receive an automatic entry into the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in November.
