TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 2, 2012) - Trent Higginbothem's one-out single in the bottom of the tenth scored Michael Arencibia from second base and gave Tallahassee Community College a 2-1 win over Gordon (Ga.) College on Thursday afternoon at Eagle Field in NJCAA baseball action.
Victories against a trio of teams from Georgia has the Eagles at a perfect 3-0.
Higginbothem's walk-off hit followed a one-out walk to Arencibia, who then advanced to second base on catcher's interference. Earlier in the game, Higginbothem's sixth inning RBI-groundout tied the game at 1-all.
He finished 2-for-5 and is now batting .385 (5-for-13) with seven RBIs through three games.
Thursday's game was, for the most part, a pitcher's duel, although both teams had scoring opportunities throughout - Tallahassee left ten men on base while Gordon stranded 11.
Tallahassee's Kraig Richmond scattered seven hits and one walk over four plus innings but only yielded one run - a two-out, run-scoring single courtesy of Bobby Woodall in the top of the third.
Gordon's Andrew Fessler carried the 1-0 lead into the sixth before running into trouble. Three straight Eagle batters walked to start the inning, ending Fessler's day in favor of Brad Sweeney.
After a fielder's choice retired Torres at home, Nick Graganella scored the tying run on Higginbothem's ground out to the pitcher.
Jared Stanley (1-0), who inherited and pitched out of a two-on, no-out situation in the top of the fifth, pitched the final six innings to earn the victory. He allowed only two hits, walked three and struck out five.
Tallahassee will host a three-team doubleheader on Friday. The Eagles and Gordon will play at 2 p.m. followed by Gordon and Central Alabama Community College at 5 p.m. Tallahassee and Central Alabama will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.
