Gainesville, FL - Louisiana State couldn't do it. Georgia couldn't do it. Fourth-ranked Florida State couldn't either. But FAMU did. The Rattlers (18-2, 10-7) stunned the sixth-ranked Florida Gators (27-15, 12-6) on Wednesday night, 4-3, in McKethan Stadium.
It's the Rattlers first win against Florida in program history.
Florida scored in the first inning off a throwing error from Alex Carrasco.
But in the 5th, the Rattlers responded. Bennie Robinson started the inning with the walk, then proceeded to steal second. Marlon Gibbs laid down a sac bunt to move Robinson to third. But apparently there was no need. Ryan Kennedy whacked a two-run blast to give FAMU a 2-1 lead.
Florida tied the game at 2 in the 6th inning. Harrison Bader singled to left center, scoring Casey Turgeon.
But in the following inning, FAMU still had something left at the plate. Michael Birdsong was hit by a pitch to open the seventh inning. Jared Walker pinch-ran for Birdsong. Walker eventually swiped second base to put a runner in scoring position. But after Walker advanced to third on a groundout from Ryan Hutson, Jeremy Barlow came up. Barlow smacked a two-run homer to give FAMU a 4-2 lead.
Munroe alum Kendal Weeks came in to pitch the eighth inning. He gave up a leadoff homer to Harrison Bader, but retired three of the next four hitters with FAMU still holding a 4-3 lead.
Weeks came in to close out the ninth inning. He retired all three batters he faced.
FAMU will stay on the road for a weekend series in Durham, North Carolina against North Carolina Central.
