TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The reigning national champion Florida State football team held its first scrimmage of spring practice on Monday afternoon on Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium.

Head Coach Jimbo Fisher said there were no surprises during the scrimmage, noting he expected to get a better grasp of who stood out after he looked at the film.

“It was the typical first scrimmage,” Fisher said. “Offense – they had a couple of big drives. I think Rashad (Greene) caught a long touchdown. There were a couple of picks here and there on defense. It’s just solid. I don’t think it was bad. I don’t think it was good, either way. I think it was just a solid typical first scrimmage.

“It may be that you’re very good on both sides – you have good players on both sides. We’ll look at the film and see it there but I thought there should have been a little more juice in the scrimmage.”

Fisher said rising senior running back Karlos Williams has performed well this spring, as he and several key players have been in green non-contact jerseys in an effort to keep as many healthy bodies on the field.

On defense, Fisher said he was impressed with defensive backs P.J. Williams, a rising junior, and Jalen Ramsey, a rising sophomore, and called rising redshirt sophomore linebacker Ukeme Eligwe “extremely talented.”

Williams started at cornerback and was named the Defensive MVP of the BCS National Championship Game last season, while Ramsey was a Freshman All-American who started at cornerback and safety in the fall. Eligwe starred on special teams and gained valuable experience as a backup linebacker.

The Seminoles will hold a second scrimmage before wrapping up practice at the annual Spring Game on April 12 at 3 p.m. (ESPN).

Head Coach Jimbo Fisher Post-Scrimmage Quotes – March 31, 2014

Opening Statement:
“The first scrimmage is out of the way. It was definitely the first scrimmage – very inconsistent on both sides. (It was) okay, I’m going to look at the film and (there was not) enough enthusiasm to be out here, but (we) had some good things on both sides. We’ll look at the film.”

On the positives he took from the scrimmage:
“Yeah, there are some things. Nothing was outstanding either way. It was the typical first scrimmage. Offense – they had a couple big drive. I think Rashad (Greene) caught a long touchdown. There were a couple picks here and there on defense. It’s just solid. I don’t think it was bad. I don’t it was good, either way. Just a solid typical first scrimmage.”

On junior OL Kareem Are:
“I think Kareem Are has a chance to be one heck of a player. I think he’s doing a really nice job of coming along. I’m very pleased with him. (Jared) Jackson, a walk-on receiver played his tail off. He’s got ability. I think he can help us a bit. I think he can get in the rotation.”

On if junior college experience helped Are exceed his expectations:
“Probably exceeded it. For him being out here three days and to go into that scrimmage with only three days of practice with what he’s done and be able to function – the last two practices he’s done some really good things. He has done his work and tried to pay attention while he was sitting out. (He’s) very natural in a lot of things.”

On what has been accomplished with the scrimmage:
“To see where we’re at. See what it’s like to get out here and play fast without coaches on the field. React, get calls and assignments. Again, it’s hard until you see the film. It’s hard to make a lot of judgments – the things you may have thought you saw may have been for a different reason but we just wanted to get them out here and compete. One thing, we do need to be more physical on both sides. We weren’t very physical and need to be.”

On what he wants to see more out of the young wide receivers:
“(Make) plays. (Complete) assignments. Get open. Catch the ball and make plays. (I’m) not seeing enough of it.”

On if the second scrimmage is more important:
I think they’re all important because to me, it’s an opportunity for you to come out here. Again, I’m not down. It may be that you’re very good on both sides, you have good players on both side. We’ll look at the film and
