Tallahassee, FL - Opening day is finally here! The 2013 college baseball season gets underway across the nation on Friday, February 15 and in Tallahassee the action begins at 4:00 p.m. on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium when No. 9 Florida State hosts Rhode Island.
Friday’s game will mark the first of a 15-game home stand for the Seminoles to start the 2013 campaign.
The Seminoles and Rams are no strangers to each other as the two schools met just last year in Tallahassee. FSU won all three games outscoring URI 25-11 en route to the series sweep. But don’t let the run differential fool you as games two and three of the series were determined by a combined three runs.
FSU took game one of the series, 17-6, scoring 11 runs in the first three innings and were led by a five-hit effort from Jayce Boyd. In game two, Mike Compton allowed just two hits - both singles - over 6.0 innings as it would be the only hits for URI that day as FSU went on to a 2-0 victory. The series finale was not without the dramatic as FSU took its first lead of the game in the bottom of the ninth when Boyd delivered a two-out, two-run walk-off double to give the Seminoles the 6-5 victory and the series sweep.
Both teams posted respectable batting averages in the series with FSU hitting .272 to Rhode Island’s .271.
The Seminole bullpen ended up being the difference maker in the series as eight pitchers combined to allow just one run on 12 hits in 13.2 innings.
Florida State embarks on the 2013 season winners of 14 in a row on opening day, while posting an all-time record of 57-7-1. Friday marks the first time that FSU will play Rhode Island on opening day. The Seminoles have also not lost the first series of the season since 1981 – a streak of 31 consecutive series victories on opening weekend.
Sophomore Brandon Leibrandt will take the mound as the opening day starter on Friday for the second straight year. He will be followed on Saturday by RHP Scott Sitz and on Sunday by RHP Peter Miller.
Friday’s game will air on ESPN3, while live stats for all three games will be available on gametracker. Audio will be available throughout the season on Seminoles All-Access, while locally fans can listen to the game Monday-Friday on 1270 AM and Saturday & Sunday on 100.7 FM.
