Winston-Salem, NC -- Sophomore forward Natasha Howard tallied her 10th double-double of the season, but the Florida State women's basketball team fell to Wake Forest, 65-55, on Thursday night at the Joel Coliseum.
Howard filled the stat sheet with 13 points, 10 boards, two blocks and a career-best five steals to lead the Seminoles (13-12 overall and 5-6 in the ACC).
Wake Forest (14-10, 4-7) got 20 points from guard Lakevia Boykin, who also made all four of her three-point attempts.
"Howard is a special player," Florida State head coach Sue Semrau said. "She works very hard. You see the production from how hard she works. I can't say enough about Natasha. I wish a few more shots would've dropped tonight so she would've been rewarded with a victory. Boykin is a tremendous player for Wake Forest. She has taken a lot on her shoulders and can score in a variety of ways."
Junior guard Morgan Toles made her season debut for the Seminoles, checking in at the 16:41 mark in the first half.
The 5-9 transfer out of Fayetteville, Ga., played 32 minutes, grabbed four boards and dished three assists.
Junior guard Alexa Deluzio scored 14 points, leaving her just one point shy of becoming the 27th Seminole to reach 1,000 career points.
FSU never led in the second half, but Deluzio's corner trey off a pass from Toles tied the game 51-51 with 4:18 remaining.
That play came just a minute after junior guard Leonor Rodriguez buried a step-back three to bring FSU within 3.
Boykin answered FSU's trey barrage with a three-pointer of her own - her fourth of the night, to push Wake Forest's lead back to 56-53 with three minutes left in the contest.
A layup by Howard brought FSU within a point, but Wake Forest's Mykala Walker made the score 58-53 with back-to-back scores, the second shot a long jumper with 1:32 left in the game.
Wake Forest guard Brooke Thomas made a pair of free throws to put the Demon Deacons ahead by 7, and Rodriguez's three-point attempt with 38 seconds left rattled out of the hoops, as the host team knocked down its free throws down the stretch.
The Seminoles return to action this Sunday at 1 p.m. against Duke at the Donald L. Tucker Center in Tallahassee, Fla.
The game will be FSU's annual "Paint it Pink" contest presented by Tallahassee Memorial Health Care Foundation, the Sharron Ewing Walker Breast Health Center, and WTLH FOX49.
The contest will air live on RSN, a collection of regional cable networks.
Fans are encouraged to wear pink and can receive a t-shirt with a $10 donation.
