TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Senior offensive linemen Cameron Erving, Tre’ Jackson and Josue Matias and junior defenders Mario Edwards, Jr. and P.J. Williams were each named to preseason award watch lists Thursday morning.
FSU’s trio of linemen were named to the Outland Trophy Preseason Watch List while Edwards, Jr. and Williams were both named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Preseason Watch List. The Outland is annually awarded to college football’s top offensive or defensive lineman; defensive ends are not eligible. The Nagurski Trophy is given to the top defensive player in the nation.
Erving, Jackson and Matias are the headliners of an all-senior projected starting lineup on the offensive line for the reigning national champions in 2014. Center Austin Barron has already been named to the Rimington Trophy Fall Watch List.
Erving captured the Jacobs Blocking Trophy last season as the Atlantic Coast Conference’s top offensive lineman. He earned first-team All-ACC honors and first-team All-American honors as the blindside protector of Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston. Jackson also earned All-ACC honors and second-team All-American accolades at left guard last year while Matias was an All-ACC third-team pick.
Edwards, Jr. steadily increased his production over the course of his true sophomore season last year to solidify himself as one of the top defensive ends entering the 2014 campaign. Williams, who was named the defensive MVP of the national championship game is also regarded one the nation’s best cornerbacks.
