TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – The Florida State women’s basketball team will be making its ninth NCAA Tournament appearance in the last 10 seasons. FSU has been selected as a No. 10 seed and will travel to Ames, Iowa, to face No. 7 Iowa State in the first round on Saturday, March 22, at 4 p.m. on ESPN2.
The Seminoles (20-11) will be playing in the Stanford, Calif., region. The winner of the Iowa State-FSU first-round matchup faces the winner between No. 2 Stanford and No. 15 South Dakota in Ames, Iowa, on Monday, March 24, at a time to be announced.
FSU head coach Sue Semrau’s upcoming trip to Ames brings back memories of her earlier days with the Seminoles. Semrau’s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance with FSU in 2001 was also in the same location, where she coached current assistant coach and second-team All-American Brooke Wyckoff.
“There was a lot of relief and excitement when we saw our name in the Field of 64,” Semrau said. “I think looking at our whole body of work, it was certainly warranted for us to be making another NCAA appearance. And I think it speaks volumes for the ACC to get eight teams in and shows how good this conference is. I’m proud of our team and especially happy for our seniors Cheetah Delgado and Natasha Howard, who both set individual records this year and have been fantastic for our program.”
Semrau has helped guide the Seminoles to a 13-12 record in NCAA Tournament games. FSU has won at least one game in 10 consecutive NCAA postseason appearances, and is pegged as a double-digit seed for the fourth time in program history. The last time FSU was seeded 10th was in 1990 when it hosted the NCAA First Round.
Florida State and Iowa State have played just once, which occurred on March 18, 2001, at the NCAA Tournament in Ames. Iowa State won that game, 85-70.
FSU’s daunting 2013-14 schedule includes playing 12 teams in the current Field of 64. Its opponents in the NCAA Tournament, according to seeds, include No. 1 Notre Dame, No. 2 Duke, No. 3 Louisville, No. 4 Maryland, No. 4 UNC, No. 5 NC State, No. 5 Michigan State, No. 6 Syracuse, No. 10 Georgia Tech, No. 11 Florida, No. 13 UT-Martin and No. 16 Prairie View.
