GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Florida Gov. Rick Scott is calling famed football coach Steve Spurrier a "Great Floridian."

The Republican governor will give Spurrier the award at a ceremony being held at the University of Florida. Spurrier, the head coach at the University of South Carolina, won a Heisman Trophy for UF and also coached the team to a national title.

The "Great Floridian" designation" is given in recognition of the outstanding achievements of men and women who have made significant contributions to the progress and welfare of Florida.

A total of 70 people have gotten the distinction since 1971.

But Scott has recently handed out the designation to several people including quarterback Tim Tebow, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Tony Dungy and former Bucs linebacker Derrick Brooks.
