Lady Blazers Finish Strong With Road Win

Memphis, TN - The Valdosta State women's basketball team finished regular season play on a high note with a gritty 50-44 win over Christian Brothers in Gulf South Conference basketball action at Canale Arena in Memphis, Tenn. on Saturday afternoon.

"I was really proud of our team today," said Head Coach Kiley Hill. "With injuries and a flu bug hitting us hard, these young ladies responded with a tremendous effort on the defensive end and found a way offensively. It was wonderful to see us play with confidence."

Amy Duke, who finished just short of her second double-double in a two week span, carried the load offensively with a 15 point effort. The Tennessee native also pulled down nine boards, which tied Owens for the team lead in the rebounding column.

The Lady Blazers opened up the scoring on the afternoon with two quick free throws by Reshaundra Owens before a jumper by Kourtnee Williams gave VSU an early 4-0 advantage.

Christian Brothers answered right back with five points of their own on an Ashley Schaefer three ball and a layup by Erica Burgess to regain an early 5-4 lead.

The see-saw affair continued throughout the remainder of the first half, which ultimately resulted in a 30-27 advantage for Valdosta State at halftime.

Owens sparked the Lady Blazers once again in the second half with a steal and a layup to push VSU out in front by five, before the Lady Bucs strung together an 8-to-4 run to knot the score up at 36-36.

The score remained tied until the 9:38 mark when Duke drilled a three pointer to give the Blazers the lead. The shot ignited an 8-to-0 run over the next seven minutes, as the Lady Blazer defense shut down Christian Brothers to help put the game out of reach for the Lady Bucs.

Brooke Satterfield shot 50.0 percent from the field to put up nine points in the game, while Kamyia Smith and Owens both added eight.

Valdosta State improved their record to 12-14 overall, 7-14 in GSC play, while Christian Brothers wrapped up the regular season with a 15-12 record overall, 10-10 in GSC play.

The Lady Blazers will now look ahead to the GSC Tournament, which begins in Birmingham, Ala. next Thursday. Valdosta State will open up postseason play against either West Florida or Alabama-Huntsville, depending on Saturday's results for the two teams.
