Athens, GA - The Georgia Lady Bulldogs will open the 2012-13 season ranked No. 10 by the Associated Press. The AP preseason poll was released on Saturday and included Georgia among the top-10 teams for the 21st time in the past 31 seasons.
Georgia garnered 599 points in balloting of the 40 AP voters nationwide. The Lady Bulldogs have now appeared in 480 editions of the AP poll, second-most nationally, including 259 weeks in the top 10.
The Lady Bulldogs return starters who averaged double digits – Anne Marie Armstrong, Jasmine Hassell, Jasmine James and Khaalidah Miller – and five more letterwinners from last year's team that finished 22-9 and ranked No. 20. In addition, five freshmen have joined the nine returnees.
This fall marks just the third time in Andy Landers' 34 seasons in Athens that the Lady Bulldogs have returned a quartet of double-figure scorers. Coco Miller, Kelly Miller, Deanna "Tweety" Nolan and Tawana McDonald returned from the 2000 SEC Championship team and led Georgia to the 2001 SEC Tournament title. After helping the Lady Bulldogs to the 1984 SEC Championship, Janet Harris, Teresa Edwards, Wanda Holloway and Katrina McClain then led UGA to an NCAA runner-up finish in 1985.
Landers enters the campaign within reach of two major milestones. He is five wins shy of his 800th victory at Georgia and 23 "Ws" away from the 900th win of her career.
All told, the Lady Bulldogs will play five games against top-25 teams, including No. 6 Kentucky, No. 15 Texas A&M, No. 16 Vanderbilt, No. 20 Tennessee and No. 22 Georgia Tech. In addition, 2012-13 opponents Rutgers, LSU and South Carolina also received votes.
The Lady Bulldogs will open the season on Sunday, Nov. 11, when they host Rutgers at Stegeman Coliseum at 2 p.m. Landers and Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer currently rank No. 3 and No. 1, respectively, in career wins among major college women's basketball head coaches.
