Lady ‘Noles Battle Wake Forest on the Road

Winston-Salem, NC - The No. 23/25 Florida State women’s basketball team travels to Winston-Salem, N.C., to face conference opponent Wake Forest in a key road matchup on Sunday, Feb. 2, at 2 p.m. at the LJVM Coliseum.

Sunday’s contest between the Seminoles (15-5, 3-4) and the Demon Deacons (11-10, 2-6) can be heard on WNLS 1270-AM with Jonathan Schillace and Melissa Bruner on the call. The game will be live streamed on Wake Forest’s official athletic website, with a subscription-based fee required to view the game.

Sunday’s game will be the 40th all-time meeting between the two schools. FSU holds a 23-16 edge over the Demon Deacons, including a 19-6 record under head coach Sue Semrau. Florida State is trying to end a two-game losing streak against Wake Forest. Last season, the Demon Deacons knocked off FSU in Tallahassee, 80-72, and also defeated the ‘Noles in the 2011-12 year at home, 65-55.

“It’s an important time of the season for us to be able to rejuvenate and get ready for the stretch we have coming up,” Semrau said. “Wake Forest has always been a tough place for us to play. They’ve got a lot of different weapons and a great player in Dearica Hamby who is averaging a double-double. She’s a phenomenal player and we’ll definitely have our hands full.”

The ‘Noles have won six of their last seven on the road at Wake Forest. Throughout the series history, FSU is 9-10 when playing the Demon Deacons on the road.

Another great low-post battle awaits between FSU senior forward Natasha Howard and Wake Forest junior forward Dearica Hamby. Both players are the only student-athletes in the ACC to rank in the top 10 in the conference in scoring, rebounding, field goal percentage, steals and blocked shots.

Two of Howard’s 35 career double-doubles have been against Wake Forest. In three games vs. the Demon Deacons, she is 13-of-24 (.542) with 29 rebounds (9.7 rpg), five steals and five blocked shots.

FSU will hope to take advantage of Sunday’s game should it come down to the wire. The ‘Noles have played in two overtime games and four other games with five-point margins, while Wake Forest has played in two games with a five-point margin (69-66 win over Davidson on Nov. 19 and 64-59 loss vs. Virginia on Thursday).

Sunday’s game begins a critical stretch of games in February leading up to the ACC Tournament. The ‘Noles have four games at home and four games on the road in February.

The ‘Noles have not allowed easy baskets much this season. Opponents are averaging just 4.5 fast-break points against Florida State, which included no fast-break points for Virginia Tech last game.

Wake Forest will look to extend its winning streak to three games against Florida State. Hamby averages a double-double with 21.1 ppg and 11.5 rpg for the Demon Deacons. In ACC play, Wake Forest is 2-6 and is coming off a close 64-59 loss at home to Virginia. Senior Chelsea Douglas is another big-time scorer for Wake Forest, scoring a league-best 48 points on Dec. 29 at FIU.
