Lady 'Noles Golf: Castren Wins Florida State Match Up

By  |

Tallahassee - For the first time since 2012, a women’s golfer won an individual title as freshman Matilda Castren won the Florida State Match Up by six strokes. The Seminoles finished the tournament third at the Southwood Golf Club, a 72 par 6,113 yard course.

“It was a really great weekend,” said head coach Amy Bond. “The girls competed really well and we proved we could play with the best teams in the country. We had some great individual performances. Overall it was a hugely successful weekend and something that will help propel us the rest of the spring. I’m extremely pleased with the tournament results and the direction the team is heading.”

The team posted their best round of the tournament with a 1-over 289 on Sunday to finish the tournament with a 17-over 881. Sunday’s round was the best the team has posted at Southwood since the first Match Up last season. The team finished 10 strokes behind first place South Carolina and eight behind Clemson.

Castren played a solid round of golf with three birdies and one bogey for a 2-under 70. Her three-day total of a 10-under 206 set a tournament low record. Her first collegiate win also marks the first time a Seminole won an individual title since 2012 when Maria Salinas won the Lady Gator.

“Matilda came in with a game plan and executed it perfectly,” continued Bond. “It’s great that she got her first collegiate win at home and I hope that this is the first of many.”

“My putting was good throughout the round even when my shots were not that good,” said Castren. “I’m very happy with the win and I gained some good experience and confidence. Our finish as a team was very good even though we could have done better but we are definitely more ready for the next challenge.”

Jumping 16 spots in the standings was junior Carlton Kuhlo who shot a 1-under 71 Sunday. With her improvement, she finished the tournament tied for 16th with an 8-over 224. She started the day with two birdies in her first four holes to give her a boost on the day.

“Carlton put together a very well round of golf today as well,” concluded Bond. “Having walked with her every hole, it was great to see her battle through some ups and downs and to have a solid finish to the day. It was a big confidence boost for her to finish under par.”

Also finished for 16th was junior Alex Milan who shot her best round of the tournament, a 1-over 73. Freshman Anna Sophia Bohmer’s 75 was added to the team total as she finished the tournament tied for 35th with a 230. Freshman Lydia Gumm finished weekend tied for 32nd with a 229.

Playing as an individual, junior Laure Castelain finish her day with an even par 72 to finish the tournament tied for 10th with a three-day 221.
