Las Cruces, NM - The No. 12 Florida State softball team (3-1) put on an offensive show out in Las Cruces, N.M. with wins over UTEP 8-0 in five innings and taking down Saint Mary’s 11-3 in six innings.

“I was really happy with the way we came out swinging the bats today and we had some opportunities to see a few of our players in different situations. The pitchers threw very well today. We are very excited for our rematch with Nebraska tomorrow.”

Sophomore Victoria East went 3-for-4 against UTEP (1-2), including a triple to right-center in the fourth. Seniors Tiffani Brown, Courtney Senas and Briana Hamilton each scored two runs in the contest.

Lacey Waldrop (1-1) got her first win of the season on 4.0 innings of shutout ball against the Miners. The junior posted four strikeouts and only allowed two hits. Junior Bailey Schinella entered the circle for the fifth and closed out the game facing only four batters.

Junior Maddie O’Brien continued to mash the ball all over Dona Ana County on Saturday. The shortstop hit two home runs and narrowly missed a third on Friday that got caught up in the wind. Against UTEP, O’Brien went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored.

The Saint Mary’s pitching staff didn’t fare much better as O’Brien slugged two home runs, including a three-run shot to end the game in the bottom of the sixth. It marked the second time in her career that she has hit two home runs in a game. The shortstop accomplished the feat against UC Santa Barbara on March 4, 2012 in Honolulu, Hawaii. For the 2014 season, O’Brien is batting .500 (7-for-14) with four home runs, five runs scored, 11 RBI and an amazing 1.357 slugging percentage.

Senas added to the power surge against Saint Mary’s with a grand slam in the fourth inning that scored Macey Cheatham, Alex Kossoff and Brown. The senior center fielder finished with five RBI on 2-of-4 hitting and scored two runs.

Jessica Burroughs (2-0) earned the win over the Gaels, going 5.0 innings with three strikeouts and allowing six hits, three runs and two earned. Schinella pitched another scoreless inning to shut down Saint Mary’s half of the sixth.

The No. 12 Seminoles will close out the Hotel Encanto Invitational against No. 9 Nebraska on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 11:00 a.m. ET.
