ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (May 9) - Hampton University plated two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Lady Pirates rally passed the Florida A&M Softball team, 4-3 in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Tournament, Thursday evening at the Ormond Beach Softball Complex.
FAMU (20-31) finished the contest with a game-high seven hits, as Robbielyn Roberson, Corinne Gordon and Genesis Lopez finished with two hits each for the Lady Rattlers.
HU (32-23) tallied four hits in the contest as Carla Tremble finished with two of them.
In a pitcher’s duel, Jailyn Jackson (25-10), the MEAC Pitcher of the Year, got the win for the Lady Pirates as she pitched seven complete innings, allowing seven hits, three earned runs and striking out four in her 35 batters faced.
Jennifer Lindsey (13-19) took the loss for the Lady Rattlers as she pitched six and two-third innings, allowing four hits, three earned runs and striking out six across 28 batters faced.
FAMU grabbed the early 1-0 advantage in the top of the fourth inning as Kieifi Myrick scored on a Genesis Lopez single to right center.
HU tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning as Shine Huwe scored on an Adrianna Scott single to right field.
The Lady Rattlers regained the lead at 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning when Tikeya Strong drove in Naesha Lewis on a hit through the right side.
HU tied the game at 2-2 in the home-half of the sixth on a Taylor McCoy solo homer to right field.
Lopez gave the Lady Rattlers, a 3-2 lead in the top of the seventh inning as she singled to right field, scoring Roberson, who doubled to right field in her at-bat.
The Lady Pirates would plate two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning as Trimble, who doubled down the left field line in her at-bat, scored on a FAMU fielding error and then would win the game on a Margaret Wilkins sacrifice fly to center field scoring Bianca Vallejo from third base.
With the loss, FAMU drops into the elimination bracket as they will face Norfolk State in the first elimination game Friday, May 10 at the Ormond Beach Softball Complex in a 10 a.m. start, whereas Hampton advances to the MEAC Softball Tournament semifinals and will face Savannah State at 1 p.m.
