TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State’s Stephen McGee is one of 15 catchers recognized as a semifinalist for the 2013 Johnny Bench Award as announced by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission on Thursday, May 16.
McGee has started all 53 games, including 52 from behind the plate, and has played a major role in helping the Seminole pitching staff to a team ERA of 2.74 – the second lowest in school history.
The Port St. Lucie, Fla., native has posted a .995 fielding percentage on the year committing just two errors in 400 chances from behind the plate. He is also throwing out 34.1 percent of base stealers on the year.
McGee has been a force at the plate this season posting a .296 average with 50 hits including 15 doubles, one triple and a career-best eight home runs. He has also scored 43 times and tallied 45 RBI. McGee leads the team and sits third in the ACC in walks with 47 en route to an on-base percentage of .458.
Ballots will be sent to the national voting panel at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists. The finalists will be announced June 4, 2013. A final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced at the 16th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 27, 2013
