TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Florida State’s Michael Snaer, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the 2012 Coaches vs. Cancer Classic this past weekend, was named the ACC Basketball Player of the Week by the ACC Office. Snaer averaged 16.3 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists while making nine of 16 shots from the 3-point line as he led Florida State to a 3-0 record and to the championship of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. He recorded his second career double double in the Seminoles’ win over BYU and averaged 28.3 minutes played in the Seminoles’ three wins during the week.
It marks the second time in his career that he has earned the award – he earned the award for the first time following his buzzer-beating 3-point shot that propelled Florida State over Duke on Jan. 21, 2012.
Snaer’s best performance of the week came in a 16-point and 10 rebound performance against BYU in the semifinals of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic at the new Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. Snaer made four field goals (three from long range) and was a perfect five of five from the free throw line. He totaled 11 points and four rebounds in the second half to propel Florida State to as many as a 27-point lead midway through the second half. Snaer made two 3’s in a span of 1:22 to push the Seminoles lead to double figures – it stayed that way for the remainder of the game.
In the championship game of the tournament, Snaer scored 14 points to goal along with four rebounds and four assists in 34 minutes played. He scored seven first half points and seven second half points – but his seven in the second half proved to be the most important. He put Florida State ahead with a lay-up at the 18:38 mark; drew the Seminoles to within on a 3-poiint shot at the 14:50 mark and scored what proved to be the game-winning basket on a lay-up with 14:24 left in the game. Snaer player 18 of the 20 minutes in the second half as the Seminoles took a game that saw eight ties and 11 lead changes out to as much as a nine point advantage to defeat Saint Joseph’s – who was picked to win the Atlantic 10.
Snaer was Florida State’s leader in its win against Buffalo with a season-high 19 points. Of his 19 points against the Bulls, 12 came from the bonusphere and helped the Seminoles score 95 points in the victory. The 95 points is the third highest single game point scoring total in 11 years under Leonard Hamilton.
