Thomasville, GA - The Thomas University Night Hawks (1-1) split an Opening Day doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against the Montreat College Cavaliers (1-1) at Varnedoe Stadium.

TU picked up an eighth inning walk off win in game one when junior catcher Andrew Crane (2-4, 2 R) stroke a two out single to right field, scoring sophomore right fielder Brandon Singer (2-2, 2 R, BB) who kept the inning alive with a two out walk and got into scoring position by stealing second base.

Thomas took the early one run lead in the bottom of the first and made it a 3-1 game in the second after the Cavaliers plated a run in the top of the second. A run in the third would give TU a three run advantage but Montreat rallied to score three in the fifth to notch the game at four. Junior relief pitcher John Gainey (1-0) picked up the win with two no hit innings.

In game two the roles were reversed as Montreat opened a 4-1 lead after 3 1/2 innings and TU was now the one playing catch up. The Night Hawks made it a two run game in the bottom of the third but MC bounced back with a run in the top of the fifth.

Thomas would score two in the bottom half of the inning but it would not be enough as the Cavaliers pitching shut the door with two scoreless innings the rest of the way. TU was held to four hits. Junior starting pitcher Kurtis Gens (0-1) took the loss after tossing 4.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on eight hits.

Thomas will look to take the series finale tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is set for 1PM.
