Athens, GA -- The fourth-ranked University of Georgia men’s tennis team (3-0) will plays its fourth match of the season and fourth in the friendly confines of the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Courts this Sat., Feb. 4 when it welcomes 64th-ranked East Tennessee State to Athens for a 1 p.m. match-up.
The Bulldogs are coming off a solid weekend in which they earned a spot in the ITA National Indoors with two wins, both 7-0, to remain perfect on the season.
Live scoring and the Georgia Tennis Live Chat will be available on Georgiadogs.com just before first serve. All the action is free and open to the public.
“After a good week of practice and some challenging matches last weekend, the guys are ready to compete again,” said head coach Manuel Diaz. “We had the opportunity to work on a few of the things that we know we have to do to get better. The guys are excited - ETSU is a great challenge for our team. They are always deep and well-coached. Hopefully we will go out and continue our good play.”
LOOKING AT THE BUCS: Georgia is 6-0 all-time against East Tennessee State, with the teams most recently meeting last season in Athens. That day the Bulldogs earned a 7-0 sweep in which then-freshman Hernus Pieters provided the clincher with a straight-set win on court 4.
No. 64 ETSU will enter the week at 0-2 but plays at Georgia State on Thurs., Feb. 2 before heading to Athens. The Bucs suffered a pair of losses to Tulsa and NC State this weekend in Lexington, Ky., as part of the ITA Kickoff to start their dual match season. The Bucs have now started 0-2 in each of the last three seasons, but have gone on to win the Atlantic Sun Tournament at the conclusion of each year.
Rogerio Ribeiro and Roger Ordeig lead ETSU with nine and eight wins, respectively, while the doubles team of Jesus Bandres and Sander Gille leads the way with five wins. The Bucs currently have no players ranked in singles or doubles.
LAST TIME OUT: The University of Georgia men’s tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season – all now having come via 7-0 sweeps – with a pair of wins this weekend over TCU and Virginia Tech to punch their ticket to the 2012 ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va., Feb. 17-20. Georgia defeated both the Horned Frogs and Hokies on the weekend, playing in the ITA Kickoff in Athens. The Bulldogs lost just three sets in the two matches and have now won the doubles point in all three matches on the 2012 dual match season in remaining undefeated.
HOT START: Georgia has started undefeated at 3-0 - with all three season-opening victories coming via scores of 7-0. The last time a Georgia team did that was 2007, when the Bulldogs went on to win the NCAA championship with an undefeated 32-0 record. Georgia has won doubles in all three matches and has not dropped a singles match to date - going 18-0 thus far.
MIXING IT UP: After a 2010-11 season in which the Bulldog doubles lineups were solidified early on, head coach Manuel Diaz has done some shuffling of his teams in 2011-12. After the fall season and three dual matches, Diaz’s Bulldogs have gone with 19 different doubles team combinations out of a total of 66 possibilities.
SPENCER’S RECORD WATCH: Georgia senior captain Wil Spencer is off to another spectacular start in 2012, winning his first three singles matches and leading the team with 21 victories on the year. Spencer sits just seven singles wins shy of reaching 100 for his career - having played his first two seasons at Texas A&M and his final two at UGA. Spencer’s combined career record at the two institutions is 93-39.
Seven more wins would make Spencer just the 15th player in UGA history to win 100 singles matches, a feat that was most recently accomplished by Drake Bernstein and Javier Garrapiz last season.
IN THE RANKINGS: University of Georgia men’s tennis senior Wil Spencer came in at No. 3 in the singles rankings in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll released Jan. 3, highlighting a strong Bulldog showing that includes two players in the singles top-10 and seven ranked individually in either singles or doubles. Meanwhile, Georgia – which reached the NCAA semifinals last May in Palo Alto, Calif. – started the 2012 season ranked No. 4 as a team and remained there in the subsequent team-only editions of the poll updated on Jan. 24 and Feb. 2. The next set of singles and doubles rankings comes out Feb. 14.
In the team poll, Southern California, Virginia, and Ohio State took the top three spots, respectively to start the season and have stayed put.
Fellow senior Sadio Doumbia also cracked the top-10 at No. 10 in singles while Ignacio Taboada was ranked No. 26, Hernus Pieters No. 64, and Campbell Johnson No. 101.
In doubles, the team of Spencer and sophomore Garrett Brasseaux were tabbed No. 8 after the pair reached the final of the ITA Southeast Regional in Athens in October. Doumbia and Taboada are ranked just behind at No. 9 while Doumbia is also ranked No. 53 with freshman Nathan Pasha.
ON DECK: The Bulldogs remain at home to take on William & Mary next Fri., Feb. 10 at 4:00 p.m. and then face in-state rival Georgia Tech on Tues., Feb. 14 also at 4:00 p.m.
