TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The 2014 women’s soccer season has officially started as Florida State held its first practice of the season Wednesday morning. The Seminoles opened practice with their first fitness test of the preseason before moving inside the Seminole Soccer Complex for a few drills.

“It’s great to be back,” Florida State head coach Mark Krikorian said. “You always anticipate the first session, looking forward to getting out here with the players and seeing exactly where we are at and I think that our group is in a pretty good spot. It was a good first session.”

The Seminoles return nine starters and 14 letterwinners from last year’s squad that finished with a school record 23 wins, a berth in the national championship game and an ACC title, their second in the last three years.

Seven players that registered double-digit points a season ago are back including senior captain Dagny Brynjarsdottir, who led the team in goals (14), points (33), shots (74) and game-winning goals (7).

“We’ve been waiting for this moment for eight months,” said Brynjarsdottir. “Our first session was really good, so it’s nice to be back training again.”

Senior defender Kristin Grubka will look to continue FSU’s defensive dominance by patrolling the middle of the Seminole backline this fall. Grubka has appeared in every game for Florida State since setting foot on campus in 2011, while starting 63 straight matches.

“Everyone is excited,” added Grubka. “We are excited to see the new girls out here for the first time. It’s just great to be back. I know since it’s my last season I am going to try and enjoy every minute.”

This year marks the 20th season of the Florida State Soccer program which opens the 2014 campaign against Portland on August 22 at 7:00 p.m. in Tallahassee.
