ORLANDO, Fla. – After two days of play, the 38th ranked Florida State women’s tennis team (2-0) remains unbeaten in singles at the UCF Invitational in Orlando, Fla.

“We had another solid day,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “The girls were absolutely dominant in singles again today, and we have yet to drop a set in singles this weekend.”

The Seminoles were 6-of-7 again in match play. Starting with doubles against Furman, sophomores Daneika Borthwick and Mia Vriens worked together to defeat Lauren Kline and Alex Moreno – Kaste 8-4. However, senior Francesca Segarelli and junior Kristina Schleich fell in their match to Amanda Murray and Michele Stanford 8-7(6).

Senior Amy Sargeant paired up with Cassie Hochwalk of UCF to pick up a win against Kelly Sullivan and Jenny Porter, 8-2.

“We still have some work that needs to be done in doubles,” Hyde said. “We need to continue to get better with our execution and court positioning. I think we are playing too passively during the times when we should be putting it away.”

In singles against UCF, Florida State showed their dominance as each of the five players have not given up any more than three games per set this weekend.

No. 37 Borthwick defeated Genevieve Lorbergs, 6-1,6-3 while No. 48 Vriens beat Jenna Doerfler, 6-3, 6-3.

Segarelli (No. 73) contributed a win against Courtney Griffith, 6-3, 6-1 and No. 100 Sargeant picked up a victory against Josephine Haraldson, 6-1, 6-1. Schleich defeated Caroline Eberhart, 6-2, 6-1.

“We have day three tomorrow,” Hyde said. “I hope that we can focus on those things that need work to finish the weekend.”

Play beings tomorrow at 9 a.m. with the Seminoles facing UCF in doubles before playing Iowa in singles.
