City of Valdosta Release: City and County to Host Parade of Champions: Road Closures and Rain Plans Identified

Citizens are invited to the Parade of Champions, hosted by the City of Valdosta and Lowndes County, on Wednesday, Jan. 30. The parade will feature coaches, players and staff from Valdosta State University NCAA Division II national championship teams: the Valdosta State’s 2011 men’s tennis team, the 2012 softball team, and the 2012 football team.

The parade will start at 4 p.m. in front of Mathis Auditorium (located at 2300 Ashley Street), travel west on Woodrow Wilson Drive, travel south down Patterson Street, and conclude at Drexel Park. At the conclusion of the parade, Valdosta City Mayor John Gayle and Lowndes County Board of Commissioners Chairman Bill Slaughter, Jr. will issue a joint proclamation, followed by brief remarks by VSU President William J. McKinney and the team coaches.

Beginning at 3 p.m., Woodrow Wilson Drive will be closed from Ashley Street to Williams Street. All other parts of Woodrow Wilson Drive will remain open until the Parade of Champions steps off at 4 p.m.

In the event of rain, the Drexel Park portion of the festivities will take place in the VSU University Center, Magnolia Room 2. The final call on the location of the event will be made by 3 p.m. and will be posted on the City of Valdosta, Lowndes County, and Valdosta State University websites.
