Montgomery, AL - Alabama State completed their sweep of the Florida A&M Baseball team as the Hornets defeated the Rattlers, 11-2 here Wednesday night at Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex in a non-conference
ASU (24-17) tallied a game high 13 hits as the Hornets had four batters to finish with two hits each, while FAMU (3-37) finished the contest with five hits as the Rattlers had five batters to finished with a one hit each.
Matt Burnside (1-1) picked up the win for the Hornets as he pitched four innings, allowing four hits, and striking out three in the 15 batters he faced, while Tony Covington (0-1) received the loss for FAMU as pitched four and two-third innings, allowing 13hits, and nine earned runs in the 30 batters he faced.
ASU jumped out to 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as they scored three runs on two back-to-back sacrifice flies by Richard Gonzalez and Waldyvan Estrada scoring both Richard Amion and Leo Rojas, followed by a hit Dexter Price scoring Dillon Cooper.
Emmanuel Marrero added to the Hornets lead in the bottom second as he scored on a FAMU infielder’s error, giving ASU a 4-0 lead.
FAMU plated a pair of runs in the top of the third inning as Kendell Weeks scored on a Peter Jackson single, followed by Reginald Grant single scoring Jackson, cutting the Hornet’s lead to 4-2.
ASU scores fours in the bottom of the fourth inning to increase their lead to 8-2, after five complete innings of play.
The Hornets score three more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, making the score 11-2 in favor of ASU, for the finale.
FAMU will return to action on Tuesday, April 23 as they will host Mercer in a two-game series with single set for Tuesday at 6 p.m. and single game on Wednesday, April 24 at 4 p.m.
