Spartans Oust Lady Rattlers in First Round Of MEAC

NORFOLK, Va. (Mar.12) – Norfolk State scored 41 second half points as they defeated the Florida A&M Women's Basketball team, 72-55, here Tuesday afternoon at the Scope Arena in the opening round of the 2013 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.

NSU opened the first half with a 9-3 lead as Rachel Gordon and Ebony Brown scored the Spartans' first four field goals of the game, with 17:04 to go in the first.

Kimberly Sparkman cut the Spartans' lead to 16-13 on a made three pointer with 11:06 left in the first.

NSU would close out the first half with a 15-8 run as the Spartans went into the break with a 31-22 lead at the break.

FAMU finished the first half shooting 19.4 percent (6-of-31), while NSU shot 53.8 percent (14-of-26).

NSU opened the second half with a 19-11 run as they took a 50-33 lead on a Quineshia Perry layup with 8:47 to go in the game.

The Lady Rattlers countered with a run of their own as they cut the Spartans' lead to 61-50 on a Jasmine Grice three pointer with 4:33 left in the game, capping off a 10-6 run by FAMU. That would be the closest that FAMU would get as NSU closed out the half with an 11-5 run for the 72-55 finale.

FAMU was paced by Kimberly Sparkman with 19 points, followed by Grice, who chipped in 13. Jamie Foreman led the Lady Rattlers on the boards with 11.

NSU had four Spartans to score in double-figures as Ebony Brown scored a game high 23 points, followed by Batavia Owens with 13, while Gordon tallied 13 and Leonard posted 10. The Spartans increase their record to 7-21 as they advance to face North Carolina A&T in the MEAC Tournament quarterfinals, while FAMU lowers their record to 11-19 to end their 2012-2013 campaign.

Grice finished the season with 653 points, shattering the school record for most points in a single season, previously held by Cathy Robinson, who scored 595 points during the 1994-95 season. She finished the season averaging 22.0 points per game, ranking No. 1 in the MEAC and No. 9 the NCAA in scoring. In addition, she scored a career high 42 points against Norfolk State on March 4 against Norfolk State. That was the second most points scored in a game by a Lady Rattler. Martha Howard, punched in 44 points against Talladega College on Feb. 10, 1979.

Sparkman finished the season with 86 three-pointers, breaking her own single-season record of 69 three pointers in a season last season.
