Pensacola, FL - Pensacola State College scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 9-6 deficit and claim a 10-9 win over Tallahassee Community College in game two of a crucial Panhandle Conference softball doubleheader on Friday evening.
Tallahassee was eyeing a sweep of the doubleheader after winning game one, 9-7, but the Pirates' late-inning rally in the nightcap left both teams' postseason picture just as muddied as it was entering Friday's action.
By splitting the twin bill, Tallahassee (19-21) and Pensacola State (22-17) remained deadlocked for fourth place in the PC standings at 3-7 with six games remaining.
In the opener, the Eagles broke the last of four ties by scoring two runs in the top of the seventh for the 9-7 victory. Prior to the seventh, the game was knotted at 2-all, 3-all, 4-all and 7-all.
Tallahassee tallied 11 hits in game one.
Marina Cobbs was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a triple. Ashley Heath-Smith was 2-for-4 with a double. Krista Garcia was also 2-for-4.
Sam Moore picked up the win in relief for the Eagles.
Tallahassee continued to swing the hot bat as game two opened. The Eagles sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning while jumping out to a 6-0 lead.
Cobbs, Heath-Smith and Brenda Santana opened the game with three straight doubles resulting in a 2-0 lead. Three batters later, Alexis Huss smacked a three-run home run to extend the Eagles' lead to 5-0. An error plated Tallahassee's sixth run of the inning.
Still leading 7-6, Tallahassee gave itself some breathing room with a pair of run in the top of the six, but the Pirates plated four in the bottom half to take a 10-9 lead.
Krysta Hoani took the loss for Tallahassee.
The Eagles will return to play on Thursday when they travel to Gulf Coast State College for a doubleheader agianst the Commodores. Game one begins at 5 p.m. eastern.
