TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 14, 2012) – Tallahassee Community College’s softball and baseball teams strengthened their respective positions in the latest Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) Coaches’ Polls, released on Tuesday.

Tallahassee is No. 1 for the second straight week in the FCSAA Softball Coaches’ Poll and moved up one spot to No. 3 in the FCSAA Baseball Coaches’ Poll.

After ascending to the top spot in last week’s softball poll by a narrow margin, Tallahassee was the overwhelming No. 1 team in this week’s vote. The Eagles received 15 of 20 first-place votes and 187 total points in the voting, easily outdistancing No. 2 Florida State College at Jacksonville (two first-place votes, 150 points).

In fact, the top seven remained intact in the softball poll – Tallahassee, Florida State College at Jacksonville, Chipola College, Northwest Florida State College, Gulf Coast State College, State College of Florida and Indian River State College.

Four of the top seven – Tallahassee, Chipola, Northwest Florida State and Gulf Coast State – are from the Panhandle Conference.

Daytona State College and Miami Dade College, both unranked a week ago, moved into the poll at No. 8 and No. 9, respectively. Brevard Community College slipped from No. 8 to No. 10.

Tallahassee, winners of nine straight games, is currently 11-3. The Eagles were scheduled to host Abraham Baldwin (Ga.) Agricultural College on Tuesday afternoon, but the doubleheader was rained out.

Tallahassee will resume its homestand at 4 p.m. Thursday with a doubleheader against Santa Fe College.

Meanwhile, Tallahassee continues to be one of the early-season surprises in FCSAA baseball. The Eagles began the season unranked in the FCSAA Baseball Coaches’ Poll before debuting at No. 4 last week.

Even a 2-2 week didn’t deter voters, who rewarded the Eagles with a No. 3 ranking in today’s poll.

Tallahassee was on the losing end of a 2-0 decision to No. 7 St. Johns River State College on February 8 then dropped the opener of a three-game set to nationally-ranked Shelton State (Ala.) Community College last Friday. But the Eagles answered with a convincing 11-2 win against NJCAA No. 15 Shelton State on Saturday then won the series with a 4-3, 11-inning triumph on Sunday to improve to 7-3.

Tallahassee leads a quartet of PC schools in the top ten – Northwest Florida State is ranked No., 6, Pensacola State College is No. 8 and Gulf Coast State, No. 10.

Santa Fe and Palm Beach State College sit ahead of Tallahassee at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Rounding out the poll is No. 4 Polk State College, No. 5 College of Central Florida and No. 9 State College of Florida.

Tallahassee travels to St. Johns River State at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
