Tallahassee, FL - Tallahassee Community College baseball standout Bobby Rice has transferred to the College of Charleston, where he will have three years of eligibility remaining with the Cougars.
Rice, a Tallahassee native who prepped at North Florida Christian School, graduated high school as an academic qualifier, thus providing the opportunity to make the jump to an NCAA school after just one season of NJCAA competition.
According to Charleston assistant coach Matt Heath, who served in the same capacity on Mike McLeod’s TCC staff in 2005 and 2006, a roster spot opened up during the summer and the Cougars were able to nab Rice as a late signee.
Rice’s resume includes an impressive freshman campaign with the Eagles, one that ended with a first-team All-Panhandle Conference selection.
“I’m real proud for Bobby, and it’s a great opportunity,” said McLeod. “He’s a great ball player, and I know he’ll do well at Charleston.”
Rice, who played primarily in left field during the 2012 season, appeared in 49 games and batted .347 – second-best on the team – with one home run and 28 RBI. His .462 on-base percentage was best among the Eagles’ everyday starters and he shared team-high honors with 40 runs scored.
Academically, Rice earned All-Conference Academic honors by both the Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) and the Panhandle Conference.
At Charleston, Rice will play under the tutelage of a pair of coaches with ties to the TCC Baseball program. In addition to Heath, Brandon Sizemore, who played for the Eagles in 2006 and 2007 and went on to a stellar career at Charleston, was recently hired as the volunteer assistant coach.
The College of Charleston is a member of the Southern Conference.
