Thomasville, GA - Thomas University men’s basketball (1-0) opened a new era with an 82-71 win over Florida National University (0-2) on Sunday afternoon at the TU Gymnasium.
In front of a capacity crowd, the Night Hawks won the initial tip-off and battled their way to the first men’s basketball victory of the season. After the teams exchanged missed scoring opportunities in the first minute of play, senior forward Justyn Watkins drove to the basket for a historical lay-up, giving TU its first points of the season and of its revival as an intercollegiate sport at Thomas University. The teams would go on to exchange baskets throughout a back and forth first half, with TU taking a slight 42-38 lead into the locker room.
In the early going of the second half the Night Hawks showed that they were prepared to take control of the game by extending their lead and lifting the level of defensive pressure. Thomas would open up a fourteen point lead midway thru the half before closing out the eleven point win. Watkins led the way for the Night Hawks with 31 points, knocking down 13 of 18 free throw attempts. Junior guards Keldrick Davis and Max Grace, along with freshman forward Adonai Rogers each contributed 12 points, giving Thomas four double digit scorers on the day.
