Thomasville, GA -- TU (2-1) defeated the visiting Montreat College Cavaliers (1-2) 8-5 on Sunday afternoon at Varnedoe Stadium to take the season opening three game series.
With Montreat holding a 3-0 advantage after 3 1/2 innings, TU made it a one run game with two runs in the bottom of the fourth. The teams exchanged single runs in the fifth and the Cavaliers made it a 5-3 game in the top of the sixth. Thomas rallied to score two in the seventh and three in the eighth to take an 8-5 lead that Montreat would be unable to overcome. Junior centerfielder Lloyd Hutcherson (2-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, 2 3B) drove in three runs with two triples. Freshman relief pitcher Kris Lee (1-0) picked up the win with a scoreless eighth and junior relief pitcher John Gainey picked up his first save of the year with a hitless ninth.
Thomas will remain at home next weekend when they welcome St. Catherine's College for a pair of double headers on Friday and Saturday beginning at 1PM.
