Homerville, GA -- It was more than just a game for the Brooks County Trojans in their first match-up at the Clinch County Panthers Friday night.

Three of the Trojans players: seniors Jicarre Watkins and Shawn Waters, and junior Johnnie Parker lost their lives in July in a tragic car accident. Before the game, the team huddled around the player's jerseys that were draped around the trademarked hammers the team brings to the games.

The captains then carried the jerseys with them as they went out for the coin toss. In the stands, Johnnie Parker's father sat and cheered on the Trojans in a game he says he had to be at.

"We're all showing the team support. By me being here, showing that I still have a feeling that my son is still here, even though he's gone," said Parker, Jr.

Head Coach Maurice Freeman said that every part of Brooks County football is dedicated to the three players. Shawn Waters brother, De'Vron Whitfield, was also in the car. He survived the crash, and will wear Waters number '32' jersey this season to honor his brother.

Brooks County won 26-14 over Clinch County.

Brooks County, GA - High school football season kicks off tonight, but for one of our local teams, tonight's game will be the first without three teammates who were lost in a car accident.

It is an exciting time, the start of football season, but tonight's matchup between the Brooks County Trojans and Clinch County Panthers is more than just a game...

In July, Brooks County Seniors Jicarre Watkins and Shawn Waters and Junior Johnnie Parker lost their lives after crashing into a tree. The tragedy happened in between practices.

Coach Maurice Freeman has said that not just the games, but every practice rep, every lift in the weight room is dedicated to their memory. Shawn Waters brother, De'Vron Whitfield, was also in the car. He survived the crash, and will wear Waters number 32 jersey this season to honor his brother.

Coach Freeman is going to let us into the locker room for his pregame talk with the team. We will bring you what will sure to be an emotional speech coming up tonight at 11.
